The “Film School Attitude”

The “Film School Attitude” is the way that students behave while they are in Film school and after they graduate. Even through they are still in Film School, they believe that they know more than anyone else but they don’t. Even when working as a PA, the lowest job, they believe that they know more than those who have been there for much longer than them and that may end up costing them work days.

Don’t act like you know everything

Because you don’t. Your first year on set is like being an intern in a medicine program. You are there to learn and fail. Success is not guaranteed. It’s at that point where you start to really understand the way things work on a set and in this industry. If you want to spend that time arguing with people, it will be your loss. You don’t have a choice but to accept to learn.

Your second year is when you can say that you have a basic understanding of what is happening and the way things are done, in front and behind the scenes. It’s only toward the end of that year that you are entering the leagues.

Respect those with experience

They might not like you or you might not like them but they do know more than you and chances are that they are your boss or are close friend with your boss. In the end it’s all about respect. You will not get along with everyone but you have to respect them for who they are and what they know.

If you have attitude make sure to put it in the close before you leave home. You do not need it on set and it will get you into trouble.

But if you show that you are not there to suck up, backstab or to show off they will give you a chance. Don’t advertise yourself as a film student or even the greatest film student. You’re a filmmaker ready to be part of the team. If you don’t let your ego take all the space, people will offer you a chance and that will make a big difference in your career and in your life.
